Giving God the Glory

God’s glory is so awesome that it’s hard to wrap our minds around. However, as believers, it’s so crucial to give God the glory rather thanĀ giving it to ourselves. God paints a pretty clear picture of that with Herod. “On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, ‘The voice of a god, and not of a man!’ Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.” Acts 12:21-23 ESV. Obviously, God takes this very seriously, so we should too. We don’t deserve the glory, and we have no right to take credit for it. We are called to glorify God in everything we do. “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.” Psalms 73:25-28 ESV. If we are taking credit for everything that we do rather than giving God the glory, how are we being faithful and telling of his works? “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:5-6 ESV. I feel like God has made it clear that we are not supposed to be doing godly things in our name, but we should be doing them in his.
