Joy

“and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.” Acts 5:40-41 ESV.

This scripture describes the apostles being charged, beaten, and dishonored for preaching in the name of Jesus. What amazed me the most when I read this scripture was the fact that the apostles rejoiced when they left because they suffered for Jesus’s name. They REJOICED because they suffered dishonor. How crazy is that? God is so wonderful that his apostles are joyful because they were allowed to suffer for the name of Jesus. Acts 5:41 is a very convicting verse. They are joyful because they suffered and I have a hard time being joyful when things don’t go my way.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

God commands us to always rejoice. Rejoice even in suffering, like the apostles. We are all guilty of it. It’s hard to always be joyful, but when you think about how God has suffered for us and how undeserving we are, it is impossible not to praise Him and rejoice in what He has done and sacrificed for us. We need to be reminded of this daily. As believers, it is our job to be joyful in what God has done for us every single day and to pray without ceasing.

“But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4:13 ESV

“But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled.” 1 Peter 3:14 ESV
